Jackson Street Food Bank is a joint venture with Temple Beth El (down toward Pearl on 12th Street). We have been in business for about 20 years and were shut down, due to the Covid precaution , from March 2020 til June 2021. But we are back in business on the LAST WEDNESDAY of each month open 5 pm til 7 pm. The December Food Bank will be on the 29th.
Today I am writing to ask you to help spread the word that we have food. Since we reopened our monthly numbers have been between 20 and 25 families. Before we closed we were serving about 65 families. I am not sure why people are not coming back. I am hoping because they are in better situation and do not need the help as much but my gut tells me it is more complicated than that. Please help get the word out that we are open and have food to share.
Secondly, about volunteers. Because our food bank is not a permanent location we are very labor intensive, on one day each month.. . that last Wednesday of each month.. On that day we set up tables, pull the food out of our storage places ( all downstairs in the fellowship hall) and set the food out in categories. Then a truck comes to bring more food esp. the fresh produce and meat items available that month. We are very thankful for the new freezer and refrigerator that we can keep more food in house but since we are only open one day per month we cannot store perishable from one month to the next. So this is a part of that set up time.. unloading the truck. Then, in the afternoon, we prepare to wel- come our clients for self-selecting food.
Under Covid Precautions we are not allowing our clients to gather inside the building but they do come inside for food selecting. Since it is dark by 5pm now we will be doing in- side distribution for the winter and Covid precautions will be strictly adhered to including wearing masks and all volunteers must be fully vaccinated.
Lastly, we sincerely appreciate everyone who can spare some time to volunteer with us but we ask you , if possible, to let us know that you plan to come. If you come on a regular basis we encourage you to sign up here on the Nourish website as a volunteer. This website will lead you to the form to sign up and you can select Jackson Street as your chosen Food Bank to support.
I hope this helps you understand the ministry that is Jackson Street Food Bank and consider including us in your outreach activities. For more information you can contact
Ed Wolfer or Virginia Gaub.
